Gardening for an Improving Lifestyle
For
beginners there is so much to discover about gardening, and
as seasoned gardeners often relate, a great deal to appreciate
and enjoy. Certainly, as part of a lifestyle we can benefit
from gardening: fresh, nutritious food, exercise, enjoy rewards
for effort, enjoy relaxation, and continually be learning.
With the rise in interest in gardening, it is easier to obtain
knowledge these days about window and sunroom gardening, balcony
gardening, container and raised bed gardening, and larger
scale production for those who enjoy living more independently
and sustainably. No wonder gardening has become a most common
national pastime.
As an avid food gardener, I encourage anyone to do any or
all of the above. I admit it. I am somewhat of an enthusiast.
Those of us who have gardened in the past can attest to the
fact that one becomes better at it with each passing year.
I have been eating delicious kale, swiss chard and winter
broccoli during the winter months (here on the coast), despite
some frosty nights. Now, as the days grow warmer, those slow
growing winter crops are beginning to pick up speed. And,
of course, its time to plan for Spring and Summer crops. Tomatoes
are starting indoors. Soon cucumbers, squash and a variety
of greens will be started for transplanting into the greenhouse
and later outside. Can we almost taste the fresh produce?
For
the raw food connoisseur, gardening even in small spaces is
such a good way to help ensure a ready supply of salad materials
and other foods of choice. It is encouraging that there is
so much information online these days, good books to read
and gardening networks to tap into. Let's all make it a healthier,
more interesting growing season to whatever extent possible
and take advantage of the expanding wealth of knowledge and
choices available for enhancing lifestyle by food gardening.
Your for health,
