Sun Stands Still

by Tara Bianca Tiller

The warming season is upon us. A time of first harvest. Seeds were planted in our hearts and earth this spring. It is a time to reflect and celebrate your own growth and vitality emerging. Nature also invites you to enjoy and celebrate the fresh sun-filled greens abundantly available in markets and from local farms, or from your garden.

Nutritionally, greens are very high in calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and they are a power house for Vitamin A, C, E and K. They are an excellent source of fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micro-nutrients and phyto-chemicals – how glorious!

June 21st marks the Summer Solstice and is officially the first day of summer! It is the day of the year with the longest hours of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere.

"Solstice" is derived from two Latin words "sol" and "sistere". Sol meaning sun, and sistere to cause to stand still. For several days before and after the solstice, the sun appears to stand still in the sky.

In Canada, June 21st is also National Aboriginal Day, holds special significance for many Aboriginal groups who already celebrate their cultures and heritage on that day.

Full Moon in June. The full moon in June is also known a the Strawberry Moon. This name was universal to every Algonquin tribe because the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries comes each year during the month of June...so the full Moon that occurs during that month was named for the strawberry! However, in Europe they called it the Rose Moon.

"How beautiful is summer! The trees are heavy with fruit and foliage; the sun is bright and cheering in the morning; the shade of broad and leafy boughs is refreshing at noon; and the calm breezes of the evening whisper gently through the leaves, which reflect the liquid light of the moon when she is seen...

...lifting her silver rim
Above a cloud, and with a gradual swim
Coming into the blue with all her light."
