Our Co-op ~
Organiko is a true co-operative where we rely on our members
to perform the various tasks necessary to bring organic food
to our tables. Members pay a surcharge of 5% that is redistributed
at the end of each month to those who have been able to volunteer
their time during that month. Our vision is to see more and
more families eating organic food, being healthier, caring
for the farmers' health and caring for our environment. We
wish to leave a legacy for our children, a healthy planet,
a healthy future. We also have a "Recycle a Step Further"
program, materials not allowed in your blue box but recycled
at the depot are brought to the North Shore Recycling Depot
once a month. We also have an organic compost program, ask
Agathe for more details.
Organic Versus Conventional ~
- Organic food is not laden with toxic pesticides, herbicides,
fungicides, growth regulator …
- It is more nutritious because it grows in nutrient-rich
soil, free of synthetic fertilizers.
- It is grown without the use of sewage sludge, irradiated
seeds and genetically engineered plants.
- Organic farming is better for our environment, it promotes
soil health naturally without using nitrogen fertilizers
that contaminate our water.
- Organically raised livestock are raised humanely and free
of growth hormones, antibiotics and are not fed animal products.
How does it work?
- Each member receives a weekly email of a list of products
offered
- Each member inputs their order
- Each member returns their order to the member responsible
to consolidate all orders (by Sunday 6 p.m.)
- Orders are emailed or faxed to suppliers on Mondays
- Orders are delivered or picked up on Wednesdays and brought
to Agathe's carport for sorting out
- Members volunteers sort the order according to member's
personal order
- Organiko orders weekly but there is no obligation for
each member to order weekly
- Each member has 2 labeled plastic bins with lids to receive
order; each week one gets filled and the other one is left,
empty, to receive the following week's order
- Each member is invited to help the co-op in different
ways; accounting, consolidating orders, ordering, sorting
out ….
- A 5% surcharge on weekly invoice is redistributed amongst
the ones who've volunteered their time.
- Bins are stacked in Agathe's carport and orders can be
picked up at member's convenience.
- Perishables such as dairy, eggs and frozen food are stored
in fridge and freezers.
Cost to join the Co-op

fridge and freezers, office supplies ….
