One Evening Over Dinner
by John Boyko
September 2004
I attended the 10th Annual Vancouver Island
Stone Sculpting Symposium last week on Thetis Island and had
the chance to meet some amazing people. One of these people
was Dr. Michael Colgan, Ph.D. (www.colganinstitute.com)
who is known internationally for his research in sports nutrition
and in aging.
Halfway through the symposium people had come to know the
strange young man who, along with his avocadoes, almonds and
olive oil, ate only salads and fruit; the “raw-fooder”. The
reaction to my diet ranged from strange stares to “Good for
you, I wish I could do that”.
One evening over dinner Dr. Colgan was talking about the
latest research on aging, including the processes of aging
and some of the drugs that prevent the aging process. Curious
about how to prolong my life I asked, “Michael, without using
drugs, what is the number one thing a person can do to prevent
aging?” Dr. Colgan looked around the table, then at me, and
said, “Well, I almost hate to say it; however it would be
to eat the diet you eat”. I think everyone was as surprised
by the answer as I was and for a moment the silence at the
table was palpable.
Then someone asked another question and the moment was over.
I finished off my salad amongst pork chop dinners, deserts
and glasses of wine. It felt good to be a “raw-fooder”.
Besides stroking my ego, Dr. Colgan’s answer also confirmed
two things for me;
- I have made the right choice of diet for my personal health
- There is solid mainstream medical research that supports
the benefits of a raw food diet.
